Includes an exclusive interview with James Lee Burke!

New York Times best seller James Lee Burke returns with his latest masterpiece, the story of a father and son separated by war and circumstance - and whose encounter with the legendary Holy Grail will change their lives forever.

From its opening scene in revolutionary Mexico to the Battle of the Marne in 1918, and on to the bordellos and saloons of San Antonio during the reign of the Hole in the Wall Gang, House of the Rising Sun is an epic tale of love, loss, betrayal, vengeance, and retribution that follows Texas Ranger Hackberry Holland on his journey to reunite with his estranged son, Ishmael, a captain in the United States Army.

After a violent encounter that leaves four Mexican soldiers dead, Hackberry escapes the country in possession of a stolen artifact, earning the ire of a bloodthirsty Austrian arms dealer who then places Hack's son, Ishmael, squarely in the crosshairs of a plot to recapture his prize, believed to be the mythic cup of Christ.

Along the way, we meet three extraordinary women Ruby Dansen, the Danish immigrant who is Ishmael's mother and Hackberry's one true love; Beatrice DeMolay, a brothel madam descended from the crusader knight who brought the shroud of Turin back from the Holy Land; and Maggie Bassett, one-time lover of the Sundance Kid, whose wiles rival those of Lady Macbeth. In her own way, each woman will aid Hackberry in his quest to reconcile with Ishmael, to vanquish their enemies, and to return the Grail to its rightful place.

House of the Rising Sun is James Lee Burke's finest novel to date and a thrilling entry into the Holland family saga that continued most recently with Wayfaring Stranger, which the New York Times Book Review described as "saturated with the romance of the past while mournfully attuned to the unholy menace of the present".

House of the Rising Sun A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) James Lee Burke Will Patton Simon Schuster Audio Books

Unlike other popular fiction writers who, as time passes, become formulaic and predictable, Burke is continuously improving his amazing skills. His ability to create images and scenes, his dialogue, and his ability to explore the battle between good and evil, external and internal to his characters is simply unparalleled in current fiction.

This story centers on Hackberry Holland, grandfather to the Billy Bob Holland of earlier Burke novels. The time frame is Texas in the early 1900's. Hackberry is an ex-Texas Ranger who, as most Burke heroes, is a complex individual who lives by a simple code of right and wrong, but also struggles with internal demons that lead him to situations that inflict pain on both himself and those he cares about most. This story centers on his quest to save his son Ishmael, a veteran of World War I who has suffered grievous wounds. Ismael believes, incorrectly, his father had abandoned him as a child. He is being held by an extraordinarily evil character that will stop at nothing to get something from Hackberry that he believes is his.

It is a rich and complex story, an epic tale of right and wrong, justice and injustice. It is a story that you can't put down.

House of the Rising Sun A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) James Lee Burke Will Patton Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

Since I read my first Burke novel ten years ago I have marvelled at the way the author can put to paper the thoughts his head generates. To my knowledge I have read all of his novels and have immensely enjoyed every one of them. From Louisiana to Montana to West Texas each set of characters are genuinely believable. His knowledge of the trials of alcohol must certainly have come from first hand experience. While entertaining to the utmost each and every book is educational in it's depiction of the local topography, geography and history. I have spent time in both Louisiana and Montana and find his descriptions of places evoking memories both past and pleasant. Thank you, Mr. Burke
Anyone who had read anything by Mr. Burke knows that he is one of the best. He's best known for his twenty-some Robicheaux detective novels set mostly in New Orleans. This series follows Hackberry Holland, a mostly crazed Texas boy with a strong sense of morality and a lot of flaws. He's overly committed to drink, is close to hopeless with women and has no sense of proportion when it comes to his personal well-being. In this one his son Ishmael, from whom he's been estranged not entirely because his own actions, comes home from war at the turn on the 20th. century and is kidnapped by a former wife and her business partner, an Austrian arms dealer that Holland has undermined in the past by sabotaging an arms shipment and stealing his beloved religious icon, a chalice possibly once used by Jesus himself. All manner of mayhem ensues, as might be expected. To those new to Mr. Burke, you don't read his books just for the story. You read them because of the writing. He is one of the very few writers of "literary" novels in the detective/action genre. His prose sparkles with keen insights and mostly stands with the best, regardless of genre. But his protagonists have a lot of rough edges. They generally dislike folks who are rich but didn't earn it, or earned it over the backs of hard-working people without the benefit of "privilege." And normal behavioral conventions tend to elude them, generally in violent ways.
Having read everything that JLB has written I am obviously a bias reviewer of this novel. But finishing this wonderful story I am asking myself "Is this the finest book he has ever written"? I have done that several times in the past to but this just might be the best of all.

House of the Rising Sun is the fifth book in the series featuring Hackberry Holland, a sometimes Texas Ranger and begins at the end of the nineteenth century. Hack is a violent troubled man who does not understand himself and is tormented by his true nature. He has become estranged from his son who is fighting in Europe during World War I and is on a quest to find and reunite with his son Ishmael. During his journey his life is strongly impacted by three strong women Ruby the mother of his son, Maggie his wife and former prostitute and Beatrice a brothel madam. His search is also tormented by an Austrian arms dealer who believes that Hack stole the cup of Christ from him when Hack destroyed an arms shipment in Mexico at the beginning of the story. This book is very dark and brooding and is very violent and sometimes quite erotic. Having said that it is one of the finest books I have ever read. There are many passages and scenes that will live in my mind long after I finished the story. This is a superb novel written by the Grand Master and I eagerly await the next novel when I will probably again be asking myself again "Is this the best book ever"?
