I got this book for the pictures, as I'm cutting apart books to create mini art exhibits in my house to go along with homeschooling history study.While this book is flawless for my purposes, it broke my heart to cut the bindings, as these books are so pretty and well thought out and pleasurable to leaf through.
From a more practical perspective, this is one of the rare non-Western art books that seems to treat foreign art in the way that a Western art book would.. chronologically by era, with artists names/regions where they are known, and delving into movements and historical context. I really appreciate that this doesn't treat Asian art as though it were folk art, but rather as a historical narrative. And for my purposes, this has worked out really well. The organization of the books makes it easy to pick art accurately for the time period we're studying (currently Qing, but we'll be circling back in time soon) and to give my kids a basic idea of how Qing art deviates from Ming art, e.g., why things changed, who the buyers were, and what movements/ who the big names were. Now if only I could find art books for Africa and Islam that would provide the same thing as well as this book does.

I bought this as a textbook, but I will be keeping it after class is over. A wealth of information presented beautifully.
"The Art of East Asia" is not only a massive (5kg) collection of superb photos, a feast for the eye, the text is informative and interestingly written, giving images of the way of living from prehistory to present cultures in Asia.

Bought this book for a college class and never opened it because I got As without doing the reading because the teacher was really enthusiastic about talking about the content. But opened it after finals and it's a beautiful book with a lot of detail! Especially worth it seeing as it was triple the price at my bookstore!

the book is old version. i did not notice this problem. but it is not a serious problem , because everyone can use it good , i will pay attention next time when i bought it
I'm currently taking my first course in Asian Art history, and I wish we were using this text! The Art of East Asia is eloquently and insightfully written and stunningly produced. The authors do an excellent job of bringing the art into the historical and cultural contexts of the time periods when it was produced. The color photographs are plentiful, large, and beautifully printed -- this is an important point, as black and white photos fail to capture the details of either fine brushwork or three dimensional pieces. This book is a tremendous value; it is far superior to other volumes costing almost twice as much. The only limitation to be aware of is that it does not include the art of India.
It is classified "Condition Used - Very Good - Our books will blow your mind! Some overall wear from reading, has a few creases." and although in general it is very good, it couldn't blow my mind because the hard cover is separated from the book and the lining broken which doesn't mean "overall wear from read, has a few creases" at all. Nevertheless, this is an important book, and so far, what is between the hard covers is in very good condition. Anyway, it was to a very low price, what balances the facts in a way.
